What is a protection dog?

What is a protection dog? A true protection dog is any dog that has been trained to defend their owner by repelling an intruder that has trespassed into their owner's personal space. This can be accomplished through barking, a threat display, or an actual defensive bite. Dogs that are sent out to chase and apprehend people are often confused for protection dogs, but in actuality, these type of dogs are attack trained, not "protection" trained dogs.  Food drive isn't necessary for protection dog training. I use food drive for hunting, sex drive for breeding, and defensive drive for protection. What is a protection dog?
