Marino’s Muzzle Master Essential Obedience For Protection Dogs

Solid & Practical Obedience for Guardian Dogs

The most important commands for our protection dogs are:

  • NO
  • COME
  • DOWN
  • STAY
  • ENGAGE (attack)

Everything else is gravy!

There are no good reasons to be using clickers, cookies, or lighting bolts from Zeus to instill solid everyday obedience in our dogs. In fact, many of these tools and methods which work fantastic for sport competition dogs, actually work against those of us wanting to raise a REAL family guardian or personal protection dogs. We need our dogs working for us, as a team, not for cookie treats or fear of lightning bolts from Zeus.

That being said, I employ every tool that works. I use treats and e-collars, but only for specific purposes. My system is simple and effective. We bring the training to the dog rather than forcing the dog to a training system. I start out all obedience training with a simple flat collar and a lead, and then I build from there as needed. Most dogs can be trained in basic obedience with a simple flat collar.

My method centers around basic time-tested principles. How do you train a dog? You show the dog, reward the dog, and correct the dog. You can teach your dog just about anything with these three simple steps. Then we add duration, distance, and distraction. All my obedience training is based upon these two sets of basic steps.

My system focuses on the five primary commands for family guardians and personal protection dogs. We use the spring pole and Jolly ball to help develop a solid off-switch in our dogs. While most so called "protection" training methods focus on the bite, my method is all about control and the off-switch. We don't teach fish to swim, and we don't tech our dogs to bite!

Here is an example of some basic on and off-leash obedience using one of our dogs, Luca Brasi.

"I’m very thankful I found Chuck’s Dogmen Underground site and immediately became a member because of the quality of what’s offered here. I believe it’s very underpriced, It has a unique approach to personal protection training that makes so much more sense for the family guardian owner than the only “protection” techniques we see. The only techniques we see for protection is watered-down military “apprehension” training of very little practical use for close-in personal and property protection. People are actually left unprotected from threats by sending their away after people, leaving the family alone to deal with a threat. The approach taught here capitalize on mastiff instincts to stick with it’s people and protect them with it’s body, teeth and life. The legal risks of training with the usual sport techniques we see are considerable – take a minute to think about the legal consequences of sending your dog out to attack people in public. Chuck’s puppy raising, obedience courses, his discussions and problem-solving for members are excellent and tailored for family guardian owners. I’ve gained immense value from his generosity in helping me with my specific issue. This is a 5-star review and a huge recommendation for the Dogman." -Vikki W, Dogman Underground Member
